Malaysia Begins Exporting Fresh Durians To China

In 2024, Malaysia made significant strides in exporting fresh Musang King durians to China, a move that marks a notable shift from earlier years when only frozen durians were allowed. This milestone came after the signing of a phytosanitary protocol between the two nations. The first batch of fresh durians, including Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, and IOI varieties, amounted to 40 metric tonnes and was shipped in phases starting in August. Malaysia is poised to export up to 1,000 metric tonnes by the end of the year, with Musang King being especially popular due to its premium status in China, where it commands higher prices compared to other durian varieties from Thailand and the Philippines.

The high demand for Musang King in China has been evident, with shipments reportedly selling out within hours in major cities like Shenzhen. This surge is expected to contribute to Malaysia's long-term goal of reaching RM1.8 billion in durian export value by 2030.
